Spyros Papaloukas’s Paros: Capturing the essence of the place
A unique exhibition organised by the independent Department of Visual and Contemporary Arts of the Municipality of Paros, on the initiative of Deputy Mayor Anna Kaganis, which brings back to the island works created by the great Greek painter in the summer of 1948.

Spyros Papaloukas, one of the great innovators of modern Greek art, travelled to Paros in the summer of 1948. The sea, the fishing boats and the austere geometry of the Cycladic landscape became his motif — in the sense that Cézanne gave to the word — and the starting point for works that moved away from descriptive representation and approached abstraction.
Seventy-eight years later, Paros encounters that gaze once more.
The Municipality of Paros presents the exhibition ‘Spyros Papaloukas’s Paros through the eyes of a collector’ at the Parikia Municipal Arts Centre, featuring works from a private collection dedicated exclusively to the artist’s Parian period. A rare opportunity to view, in one place, a distinctive chapter of his creative output and to see Paros through the light and gaze of a great Greek painter.
When light becomes the true subject.
Art historian and exhibition curator Christina Petrinou points out that Papaloukas’s modernism is expressed both in his choice of simple, everyday subjects as in his painterly language, transforming the influences of French modernism into something deeply personal.
Dr Maria G. Moschou observes that, on small-scale surfaces, Papaloukas conveys, with minimal means, the vastness of natural space and the infinity of light, dissolving the solidity of the natural environment.
An unexpectedly contemporary Papaloukas
As noted by Pavlos Thanopoulos, who curated the exhibition, Papaloukas’s creations ‘transform the lessons of Post-Impressionist trends and Fauvism through the foundations of his Byzantine training’, whilst he regards the works from Paros as ‘a milestone in the quest for the truth of Greek nature’.
The collector’s perspective
The works come from a private collection and have been selected specifically to shed light on the Paros period. The exhibition thus also serves as a narrative of the collector’s perspective: of how a collector’s choices can reconstruct an entire creative chapter.
The exhibition is accompanied by a special bilingual catalogue, featuring the works and texts that shed light on Papaloukas’s Parian period, his relationship with modernism, his journey towards abstraction, and the decisive role of light in his painting.
